Hi, I'm Martin B. Justesen
Chess author · Creator of the Tactics Ladder · Writer of Say Chess
I'm an amateur chess player from Denmark with a passion for chess improvement and teaching. With a Master's degree in History and working as an archivist by day, I spend my free time studying chess, writing about it, and creating resources to help others improve.
From 1400 to 2000 — the honest way
In 2012 I was rated 1,474 in blitz on Chess.com. Ten years later I crossed 2,007. No shortcuts, no miracle method — a decade of deliberate work, with painful plateaus along the way (2013 cost me 273 points; 2017 netted me minus three).
What finally moved the needle was structure: slower time controls, serious study, analyzing my own games — and above all, systematic tactical training. My puzzle rating climbed from around 1,500 to a peak of 2,707, with nearly 5,000 puzzles solved during the most intensive stretches. That experience is the blueprint for everything I build.

My Projects
Chess Books
I've published more than a dozen chess books. The biggest project is The Tactics Ladder — ten paperbacks, 5,000 puzzles organized by difficulty from beginner to master, and the foundation of the free trainer on this site. My best-selling title is the 100th Anniversary Edition of Capablanca's Chess Fundamentals, which I edited with modern notation and extra diagrams.
- · Blindfold Endgame Visualization — 50 positions for calculation training
